Firstly, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. There's a good chance however, that the answers to your questions could be found on this page. Please feel free to explore.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS?
For those diagnosed with dementia or a terminal illness, a TIME album is absolutely free.
People without a disability, who would like a TIME Album will be required to pay a fee of £1,800.
HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?
Firstly please just contact us expressing and interest. We’ll take some preliminary details and get back to you very quickly to arrange a visit.
We'll ask you, to gather photographs, music and video and any special items which are of deep personal significance. We will also require some notes about your life, which will subsequently be used for the video interview. This may sound a little daunting but don't worry. Our representative will always be available and will guide you on getting things together.
When we have all the necessary material, the album will be compiled at our studio.
Our representative will then contact you to arrange the presentation of the finished album.
WHO CAN APPLY?
TIME Albums was initially conceived to offer those with dementia a source of reminiscence therapy via a single media containing a “This Is Your Life” type biography and a keepsake for their families. There is however, no reason why anyone with a terminal illness can have a TIME Album.
TIME Albums is a new organisation and until appropriate resources are available, we can only consider applicants who live in Hertfordshire and Essex.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PRODUCE A TIME ALBUM?
Once we have all the assets, scanning photographs, ripping music, digitising video and editing the interview will take a few days. The final product comprising a DVD and a USB data stick, will be ready within approximately a week of all assets being made available.
IS THERE A WAITING LIST?
At the moment, no. With the resources available, we should continuously be able to deliver our target one album per week.
WHERE IS THE INTERVIEW FILMED?
The interview is normally filmed at the client’s place of residence. If this is difficult, we can arrange to film the interview at a relative's or friend's home or even at our studio.
HOW MANY OLD PHOTOGRAPHS AND HOW MUCH MUSIC AND VIDEO DO YOU NEED?
Photographs, music and video should be chosen to fit with the timeline and flow of the interview. The interview will be a brief biography of the client’s life, perhaps with a few specific highlights, special or memorable moments and maybe touching on specific achievements. The more media we are given, the longer the album will take to produce.
COLLATING MY PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEO AND MUSIC? I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START
Unfortunately, we can’t actually do this for you but don't panic! Just follow our 'Tips On Getting Your Media Ready' and you'll most likely end up enjoying yourself!
It might an idea to sit down with family or friends and just chat about your life. Pull out photo albums and put on some music. Relax and enjoy looking back at your rich and full life.
Tell family and friends that you’re having a TIME album made and that you would appreciate them sending you any pictures or video they might have of special times that you’ve shared.
With familiar faces around you, take pictures and put them into some type of chronological order, perhaps starting with your school days and slowly working towards more recent times.
Alternatively, it might be easier to put photographs into groups which in turn may represent specific periods in your life.
While your listening to your favourite music, make notes of artists and song titles and try to place them in your timeline.
If you have videos, make an evening again with family or friends and go through some of your recordings, writing down some pieces which mark special points in your life.
Our representative will leave you an A4 pouch folder and some Media Reference Table sheets so that you can easily arrange your photographs and we know what they represent. A guide on gathering your media and more Media Reference Table sheets are available here.
SOME OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE GOT DAMAGED OVER THE YEARS. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?
It's hard work and we can only do so much but we'll try our best to restore damage images. Click on the examples below to see in detail what can be achieved.
SOME OF MY PICTURES ARE VERY DEAR TO ME. I'M WORRIED THAT THEY MIGHT GET LOST OR DAMAGED.
We completely understand! We know that any amount of insurance won't cover the personal value of your items and so our team take great care during the handling and processing of your photographs and video.
Your material is filed separately to reduce the risk of loss and we don't use any third-party organisation so all your media remains with us at our studio until it is returned to you.
We have extensive experience of processing old media. For example, the use of special linen gloves when handling photographs, slides and film is mandatory, media is exposed only when being scanned or copied and all media is stored in a temperature and humidity monitored environment.
HOW LONG IS THE VIDEO?
The finished video interview (after editing) will be approximately forty minutes long. The album itself will be a little longer.
HOW LONG WILL FILMING TAKE?
On arrival, our field technician shouldn’t take more than ninety minutes to set up cameras, lighting and audio recording equipment.
If all goes smoothly, the interview itself should take only about an hour or so. Our team will be more than happy to break as necessary.
Breaking down the equipment will take about forty-five minutes so all-in-all, we should be done in an afternoon.
CAN WE SEE THE ALBUM BEFORE IT IS HANDED OVER?
Yes. We would make a draft available on our You Tube channel for strictly private viewing and would send you the URL so that only you can see it. If you would care to make some notes, you would be more than welcome to contact us with any changes you’d like.
HOW DO I VIEW A TIME ALBUM?
The finished production is delivered on a DVD and a USB memory stick. The DVD can be played in a DVD or Blue-ray player. It can even be played in a computer which has a DVD / Blue-ray player.
The USB memory stick can be used with a computer or tablet. With the proper connection, it can even be used with a mobile phone. An advantage with the USB memory stick is that the actual media file (the album itself) can be easily be copied to computer or tablet.
I DON’T HAVE A DVD PLAYER OR A COMPUTER BUT CAN I STILL HAVE A TIME ALBUM?
Yes and we might even be able to help you out with a disc player.
I DON’T HAVE DEMENTIA BUT CAN I STILL APPLY FOR A TIME ALBUM?
Time Albums is a charity that provides a source of reminiscence therapy via a 'This Is Your Life' type biography which is delivered on a single media to people who have some form of dementia or memory loss. It would therefore, be inappropriate for us to offer the same service to those with no medical condition and quite complicated to provide a similar service, even for a fee to those with no medical condition.
If however, you would like a comprehensive video biography like a TIME album, we suggest that you search locally for a media production company.
HOW DOES A TIME ALBUM HELP THOSE WITH DEMENTIA?
It has been observed that during times of stress or confusion, going over one’s past can have a calming effect. Flicking through photograph albums, listening to music from back in the day and chatting about specific portions of history all contribute to reassuring the person with dementia. This is known as reminiscence therapy. A TIME album is a source of reminiscence therapy and makes the process of ‘looking back’ much easier.
I WOULD LIKE TO DONATE BUT WOULD APPRECIATE SOME RECOGNITION
Quite simply, TIME Albums couldn't exist without the generosity of our donors. It's not just us who are grateful but those who benefit from a TIME Album but who may not be able to show their gratitude directly. To our donors, we humbly offer the following reward scheme:
- Up to £99 - Certificate of donation.
- £100 - £999 - Certificate of donation and your name on the Donor's List on our web site.
- Over £1,000 - Free album (only for the period of a specific crowdfunding project and limited to Hertfordshire).
I REPRESENT AN ORGANISATION AND YOUR REWARD SCHEME SEEMS DIRECTED AT PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS
TIME Albums is always delighted to receive donations from companies, other charities or local authorities. Your organisation's details will be added to our Donors page and we would be happy to discuss advertising on our web site.
WHY FIFTY ALBUMS PER YEAR?
We want to help as many people as possible. At the same time however, we must be realistic, weigh targets against resources and be in a position which won’t let down those who we have committed to helping.
The cost of delivering fifty albums per year is about £90,000. We feel that this is not an unreasonable amount and is quite attainable. Part of our annual budget will be spent on three full-time staff. Between them, a presenter / researcher, compiler / editor and field technician should be able to produce one album every week.
CAN TIME ALBUMS DELIVER MORE THAN FIFTY ALBUMS PER YEAR?
The simple answer is YES but more resources would be required. Some resources and hence their respective costs, would remain unchanged. We would not for example require larger premises or more marketing funds and the increased cost of telecommunications would be negligible.
We would however, require more equipment and more staff. Our research suggests that most clients would prefer to engage during weekends. It would be quite impractical therefore to consider more than one visit over a weekend with the same amount of staff and equipment.
